For over 35 years, Mark Mack’s Californian designs for housing, residences and cultural projects have earned him a worldwide and lasting reputation. Clarity of form, rational and pragmatic organization, simplicity of construction combined with sensual use of color and materiality have resulted in a well-rounded oeuvre of projects in many locations and continents.

Worked for Atelier Hans Hollein in Vienna,1971-73; HAUSRUCKER CO in New York 1974-75 and Emilio Ambasz in New York, 1975-76; before settling in California.

He co-established Batey&Mack, in San Francisco in 1978. and in 1984 established his own firm, MACK Architect(s), in San Francisco. 1991 moved the practice to Venice, California further expanding the firm’s platform with winning housing competitions and projects in Japan, Austria and California. The firms projects range from cultural, residential and institutional buildings in the US, to hospitality and mixed-use complexes in the Middle East and large housing projects in Austria and Korea. Current projects include the Kaneko, a cultural project of repurposing existing warehouse and new buildings buildings for a cultural center in Omaha NE; high and low-rise housing developments in South Korea and Austria. In addition he has been involved with cultural non-profit organizations in Los Angeles as a board member,a curator for several installations and exhibitions.

Mark Mack’s typological approach to design is informed by his academic interests and practice. In 1977 he established Western Addition and consequently co-established Archetype Magazine in San Francisco. At the same time he started teaching at the University of California at Berkeley and in 1986 he was appointed Professor of Architecture. Since 1993, he has been a Professor of Architecture at AUD at UCLA. Additionally, he has been a member of the visiting design faculty at Harvard University, Rice University, University of Chicago, and SCI-Arc and he has lectured widely in the United States, Asia and Europe.

Several Progressive Architecture awards and solo exhibitions at the SFMOMA and the Museum of Angewandte Kunst (MAK) in Vienna as well as many participations in the International Architectural Biennale in Venice highlight his path of professional and academic achievements.

Mark Mack’s architecture has been published in hundreds of national and international journals, in addition to monographs at El Croquis and Rizzolli as well as the 1994 published book, Mark Mack, a Californian Architect by Wasmuth.

Mark has retired his architectural practice and teaching appointments in 2019 and currently works on his fledgleing career as a music promoter and as DJ Orange among other interests around enhancing our fragile urban and rural environments.
