SHENYANG MASTERPLAN

LOCATION: SHENYANG, CHINA

DATE: 2008

PROGRAM: HOUSING, COMMERCIAL, RETAIL

SIZE: 300,000 SM 2500 UNITS OF HOUSING

The masterplan for Shenyang creates a new gateway of modernity to the south of the city. Housing, office and retail space is intertwined to create a new pragmatically programmed axis onto which new development can connect. A series of canals feed the public space with recreational activities, public parks, teahouses, restaurants and cultural institutions.

This development has a strong emphasis on Feng Shui practices with southern orientation for all residential units. While this results in a uniform orientation for most of the buildings, the plan creates a variation of density, form and program to produce more dynamic urban spaces. Throughout the development there is a network of public pathways to allow for a more pedestrian oriented lifestyle. As the density diminishes away from the central axis, there is a gradual transition to low-rise, residential spaces. A signature high-rise triplet building becomes a landmark for the new urban landscape.
