STREMMEL RESIDENCE

LOCATION: RENO, NV

DATE: 1992

PROGRAM: SINGLE FAMILY RESIDENCE

SIZE: 7000 SF

Located in the arid high desert on the outskirts of Reno, this residence required a solution for a house isolated in a stark landscape. The basic configuration of the house is that of an ancient urban courtyard house. In order to to suit this type to a rural setting, the house sits on a landscaped plinth; porticos and punctured walls enclose an open plan house configuration.

An oversized trellis serves as a mediator between the harsh environment and the domesticity of the interior. Hovering over the disparate parts of the house, it serves both as a symbol and as a shading device for the outdoor rooms.
