OUTLAW HOUSING STUDIO: THE EXCURSION

The Outlaw Housing Studio Excursion provided students an intense immersion into the issue of informal and “unlawful” housing as it is practiced in Egypt, where over 75% of housing produced is informal. We visited several areas of interest: The first was Cairo, with its immense urban density focusing on the informal housing areas along the city's ring road. We then visited the low income housing city of Haram followed by the high-end golf course development compound of Allegria. We were hosted by Professor Basil Kamel from AUC (American University Cairo) which provided housing and transportation. As one of the highlights we joined some of their students, also studying informal housing, in the rural areas of Egypt for an exciting trip into the White Desert. We camped under starry skies with many curious desert foxes.
