ALLEGRIA HOUSING DEVELOPMENT

LOCATION: CAIRO, EGYPT

DATE: 2007

PROGRAM: VILLA HOUSING (12 TYPES)

SIZE: 300-1440 SM

The villas designed for Allegria offer a new living alternative for relaxed living, combining traditional living with contemporary styling. The twelve distinct villas are prototypes for an exclusive country club development by SODIC on the western outskirts of the vibrant city of Cairo. As a design strategy we took on the challenge of finding unique architectural features related to the Egyptian lifestyle and use them to create programmed architectural elements for the villas. The design for the villas focused on developing distinct villa typologies, program distribution, building orientation, color selection and material applications.

The design for the villas took advantage of generous interior spaces which drew in the light from garden views, patios and covered pergola terraces without adding floor area and cost. The spaces formed between the interior vestibule and the garden pool are driven to connect and allow flexibility for different uses.

SODIC not only looked for variety and expression within the complex, but asked us to create optional roof and basement plans for the villas. The roof option was cautiously developed to proportionally integrate to the two story villa and not become an obstruction

to the design. From the beginning, our design used sloped tile roofs which allowed us to use the interstitial space to hide the mechanical infrastructure and thermal insulation. Basements allowed us to create sunken courts around the footprint of the house to allow natural light to the living quarters below.

In addition to the formal architecture, we proposed expanding the client's color palette to avoid being mistaken for a typical, washed out pastel cluster. The colors chosen for our villas are inspired by the earthy tones from the desert and the indigenous flowering landscape. While a subtle ochre color spreads through most of the building, bursts of color are expressed with accented inserts into voids, niches, terraces, setback walls and various other architectural elements.

Allegria is not another housing trend, it is an opportunity to create villa prototypes as a housing solution.
