THE KANEKO

LOCATION: OMAHA, NEBRASKA

DATE: 2003

SIZE: 54,000 SF

PROGRAM: MUSEUM, STUDIO, EVENTSPACE

This is the original design concept for THE KANEKO in Omaha, Nebraska which includes space for a museum, library, event space, video screening room, studio space, and a private residence. Three phases of the project have already been completed: the Kaneko Bowtruss Gallery, the Kaneko-UNO Library, and the Kaneko Loft.

Located in downtown Omaha among a lively arts and entertainment district with many turn-of-the-century brick warehouses, the KANEKO is a collection of three existing warehouses which forms the enclosure for three major program areas: the museum, the studio and the residence.

The museum will be the most visible and publicly accessible operation and will combine space in all of the three existing buildings and the new addition. As a new museum type, the space will function to showcase a particular artistic discipline, ceramics, and will also exhibit guest curated shows and installations which explore conceptual, phenomenological and spiritual dimensions of art and other related disciplines.

The studio serves as a work and production space, where large ceramic objects, drawings and glass pieces will be created and assembled together with assistants and interns which learn about the process of making of art.

The residence is the least accessible and thus the most private portion of the project. The design exploits the character of the existing raw space, creating an open, free living space for the artist’s family while allowing for a generous spatial appreciation and the creation of large specialty areas such as a library and meeting spaces.
