NIERC MASTERPLAN COMPETITION

LOCATION: CHUNGNAM, SOUTH KOREA

DATE: 2008

SIZE: 43,000 SM

PROGRAM: RESEARCH, EDUCATION, & EXHIBITION

Masterplan Design Competition for NIERC (National Institute of Ecological Research & Conservation) The concept is one of active participation in the natural landscape as a didactive and educational experience. The many layers of the site reveal itself in a hyper-natural, a productive and research oriented landscape in which life generating manifestations can be observed and recreated. From the magnificant formation of migrating bird patterns to the rich microscopic life in the wetlands the site becomes an open book of our own human and geolocical history. This regenerative history and presence is being explored in many different ways on the site:

Formal - through personal docent tours which take individuals and groups through a series of different grade of informational experience such as different timed walking loops. Self guided audi visualtour experiences which point to the different elements on the site.

Informal - Through interactive signage which allows visitors to self-direct themselves to specific areas on the site and learn about the different natural characteristics of the site.

The architecture of the buildings and the landscape strategies supports these possibilities, such as the visitors centers ramp to the roof from which to overview the site, the pathways leading over the Eco-plex allowing interior views of the complex as well as didactive pathways leading to various parts of the site.
