MACK Architect(s) is widely recognized for thoughtful, elegant architecture that emphasizes the integration of built form and the environment. Clarity of form, colorful simplicity, straightforward construction and an appreciation of tradition, climate and materiality give MACK's architecture a quality of timelessness for which it has been recognized worldwide. The architecture remains attached to a vision of architecture as craft, an eminently physical construction whose solidity turns more splendid the more elementary it is.

One of the firm's specialties is housing as architecture. Typically this area employs highly conceptual examples which compromise the ability of living or very pragmatic examples which are focused on functional and user-oriented concerns. MACK Architect(s) goal is to elevate housing into a dignified and exciting example of living with architecture.

MACK Architect(s) provides design, architectural and planning services which strives toward an architecture which is uniquely functional and user-friendly while utilizing tactile and natural materials to celebrate the colorful spirit of the modern and californian lifestyle.

The firm is further known for its relaxed approach to the practice of architecture. The search for an appropriate and enlightened solution should be a pleasant activity not a torturous one. Many arrangements of architectural involvement are possible. We see ourselves not as top down design professionals but rater as participants operating in parallel with special skills and knowledge to achieve a carefully considered design solution.

From numerous residential projects in unique urban and rural contexts to large housing estates and urban master plans, MACK Architect(s) also design museums, interiors, restaurants, retail offices and showrooms.

Their conceptual and built work have been widely exhibited in such forums as the 1980 and 1996 Venice Biennale, the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco and the MAK Museum of Applied Art in Vienna. As principle designer Mark Mack has lectured extensively in the United States, Europe and Asia about his work. Current work includes housing and hospitality projects in South Korea, a Museum of Creativity in Omaha, Nebraska as well as several residences in Austria and California.

"......Cool shapes, a clear geometrical form which is marked by lively colors, open and transparent structures which are nevertheless opaque and closed to the outside: all this characterizes his buildings, in particular his California houses. Hardly visible from the outside, the floor plans often have a surprising and even sometimes apparently unpredictable complexity. At the same time Mark Mack creates a flowing relationship between the interior and the exterior and brings these together by a patio which, combined with an overlying structure, provides shelter from rain and sunlight.......

.....To Mark Mack, architecture is not a question of style; Modernism represents to him more an attitude of life, a challenge for a procedural approach which includes both the client as well as the skilled manual worker in the planning of the project. The feeling he has for private and public spaces associates him with the urbanistic visions of Roland Rainer, whose student he was at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in the 70s."
